Job description

Its world class Health team puts data and scientific innovation at the service of a healthier society. As a Python Engineer, you play a key role in PARC, a European partnership on chemical risk assessment with strong ambitions in FAIR Data reuse. 

Our stack is based on Python and open-source tools like Docker, Git and Jenkins and we have a lot of freedom to use the best tool for the job. We develop scientific applications and research platforms to support EU-wide stakeholders in assessing the impact of chemicals on human health by setting up data repositories & flows and distributed services. Your software solutions will improve the accessibility, interoperability, and reuse of health data across and within organisations. 


Some of your daily activities: 

  • You gather requirements and needs from data users and map them to the FAIR principles. 
  • You translate technical requirements into an implementation plan and build it as an operational platform, while giving specific attention to the necessary safeguards on secure data access and the correct reuse of personal data. 
  • You support your colleagues and help consolidate good software engineering practices. 
  • You work closely with our European partners, other data experts within VITO and domain experts on Environment & Health. 

Job requirements

Must Have:

  • You hold a Master’s degree (or PhD) in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics or have equivalent experience as software engineer or data professional working with scientific applications.
  • You know how to take advantage of Python’s multiparadigm using the best of OOP and functional programming.
  • You have professional experience with Python data stack (Pandas, Numpy, Scipy, …) and with Python development workflow and its libraries (Pytest, Black, Ruff, Flake8, ...)
  • You follow the Python standards like PEP8 and PEP257.
  • You know the best practices in software architecture and understand the pros and cons (Clean Code, Solid Principles,…).
  • You have an excellent command of English. 

Nice to have: 

  • A broad knowledge of and experience with established (and upcoming) software engineering technologies.
  • Experience with the (re)use of sensitive personal data.
  • Hands-on experience with the development and implementation of distributed or federated data infrastructures and related web services.
  • Familiar with linked data concepts & technologies, like RDF, OWL or SPARQL.
