VITO is a key player in the use of Earth observation and remote sensing data for a wide range of applications. Data from satellites, drones, and fixed sensors are collected, processed, and analyzed to monitor changes in the environment, land use, and infrastructure. We support sectors such as agriculture, forestry, water management, and urban planning, while also playing an essential role in civil security (supporting fire brigades and other emergency services), defense, and maritime security.
For these domains, VITO works with a broad range of sensors, including traditional RGB cameras, multi- and hyperspectral sensors, infrared and Short Wave Infrared (SWIR) sensors, UV cameras, radar, LiDAR, and radio frequency (RF) sensors. VITO possesses extensive expertise in the calibration, processing, analysis, and integration (fusion) of these systems.
We are looking for a motivated researcher who wants to contribute to the development of innovative remote sensing solutions for monitoring and enhancing maritime security. You will contribute to international research and innovation projects and collaborate with industrial partners, government organizations, and other research institutes.
As a researcher, you will contribute by:
Analyzing, interpreting, and combining various data sources (radar, RF, optical, etc.) for maritime security applications.
Designing and implementing data analysis workflows and algorithms.
Providing scientific and technical follow-up of projects and supporting coordination activities within the team.
Supporting project proposals, reports, and scientific publications.
Collaborating with internal colleagues and external project partners in multidisciplinary research and innovation projects.
You hold a Master's degree in Science, Engineering, Bioscience Engineering, or a related field.
A background in remote sensing, data science, or a related domain.
Experience in processing relevant data (optical/hyperspectral, radar/RF, etc.) and data fusion.
Demonstrable experience with drone-based image processing (UAV, USV) is an asset.
Experience with programming tools such as Python, R, and Google Earth Engine.
Interest in or demonstrable experience with maritime applications.
Interest in both research and the practical implementation of Earth Observation (EO) solutions.
You are a team player with strong verbal and written communication skills.
You are resilient under pressure and flexible, and are willing to undertake short international trips and attend networking events
Additional note for the vacancy:
A NATO security clearance is required for this position and will be part of the onboarding process.
