VITO/EnergyVille’s GEMS (Grid and Energy MarketS) team plays a key role in shaping the future energy system and markets to support a safe transition to a renewable energy system. The team’s expertise covers a broad range of topics: from conceptual design of energy and flexibility markets to modelling of energy markets and systems. Specific areas of application include the integration of flexibility from distribution systems into the energy system and markets, grid decision support, tariff design, TSO-DSO-consumer coordination, market-based sector integration, wholesale market design (long-term instruments and short term markets), and decentralized market concepts such as peer-to-peer trading and energy communities.


As R&D expert electricity market design, you will support the team in the design of efficient market-based solutions in research projects and consultancy assignments.


Your tasks and responsibilities:

  • You will act as a key expert on electricity market design, in particular on topics related to market-based flexibility integration from the distribution system and decentralized market solutions.
  • You will provide market design consulting services, including collaboration with internal experts and interaction with customers.
  • You stay up to date with industry trends, current and future energy market developments and regulatory changes, and make sure it is shared within the team.
  • You will prepare and present high-quality reports and present them in key messages to our customers.
  • You will collaborate with our market modelling experts by providing insights from stakeholders needs, upcoming regulatory changes and market developments.
  • You actively extend your network to improve scientific excellence and to expand the team’s portfolio of consultancy assignments within your area of expertise.

Job requirements

  • You hold a master's degree in engineering, Economics, or another relevant study, combined with at least 3 years of relevant experience within the energy sector (consultancy, regulator, research institute, energy utility, system operator).
  • You have factual knowledge of how today’s energy markets are organized in Belgium and the EU.
  • You have excellent communication and networking skills.
  • You are fluent in English.

Finally, having the following qualifications can give you a competitive edge:

  • You are fluent in Dutch or French.
  • You have experience in writing tenders or project proposals.
