AI Engineer – Medical Software & Regulatory Innovation

  • Hybrid
    • Mol, Antwerpen, Belgium
  • R&D & Engineering

Job description

At VITO, we believe in science and innovation as drivers for a healthier, more sustainable future. Within our Digital BioSystems (DBS) team, we work at the forefront of AI, digital health, and personalized medicine, developing solutions that truly make an impact on patients and healthcare systems.

We are looking for an AI Engineer who wants to help shape the next generation of AI-enabled medical software and data-driven healthcare solutions in a collaborative, inclusive, and purpose-driven environment.

Your Impact

As part of an international and multidisciplinary team, you work at the intersection of health data sharing, diagnostics, translational research, software innovation, and regulatory readiness. You contribute to projects that set the scene and build innovative, trustworthy, and regulatory-ready software solutions for the future personalized healthcare and clinical lanscape, empored by Digital (Virtual) Twins, AI and data-driven methodologies.

You will:

  • Contribute to research projects in the domain of personalized medicine and regulatory science. Responsibilities include managing interactions with consortium partners, defining user and system requirements, designing and implementing proof-of-concept tools and prototypes, and preparing technical documentation and project deliverables.

  • Design and development of (agentic) AI workflows and proof-of-concepts and prototypes up to TRL 6 of Generative AI-supported applications

  • Contribute to testing, evaluation, validation and reporting on AI driven and medical device software (MDSW), including MDSW from external clients

  • Development of regulatory services for MDSW, together with colleagues and business development leads

  • Develop software aligned with MDR, IVDR, the AI Act, and GDPR by translating regulatory and compliance requirements into practical development, testing, and documentation workflows.

  • Collaborate with researchers, engineers, clinicians, and external partners across Europe

  • Turn ideas into usable systems, prototypes, tests, services, and real-world healthcare solutions that create impact.

You play an active role in bridging research, software engineering, and real-world healthcare applications.

Job requirements

We are looking for someone who combines technical expertise with curiosity and big-picture thinking

You bring:

  • A MSc or PhD in Computer Science, AI, Bioinformatics, or a related field — or equivalent experience

  • You think in terms of use cases and products and can work effectively in situations where defining and refining requirements is part of the job

  • Strong programming skills (Python) and experience with healthcare related software prototyping, API integration, automation and deployment-oriented development

  • Experience in AI workflow development (generative AI, agentic AI, …)

  • Experience with software and documentation practices aligned with MDR, IVDR, AI Act, and GDPR or a strong motivation to grow into this field

  • familiarity with web technologies (REACT), and related APIs, JavaScript, Typescript and CSS

  • A hands-on mindset: you enjoy building, testing, and improving real solutions

  • Strong collaboration and communication skills in an international environment

Experience with health data types and data storage, integration, or management platforms, health data standards such as HL7, FHIR, OMOP, and related interoperability frameworks is a plus but not required. Motivation to learn is just as important as prior experience.

What Makes You Thrive Here

You will feel at home if you:

  • Enjoy working in evolving environments where not everything is predefined

  • Like combining technical depth with a broader system view

  • Are curious about both AI innovation and real-world healthcare impact

  • Take ownership and enjoy turning ideas into tangible results

  • Value collaboration, knowledge sharing, and continuous learning

We know that no candidate ticks every box. If this role excites you, we encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn’t match every requirement.

Offer

At VITO, we are committed to creating an inclusive workplace where everyone can thrive. We believe diverse perspectives strengthen innovation.

You can expect:

  • Meaningful work with real societal impact in healthcare

  • A flexible and supportive work environment, with attention to work–life balance

  • Opportunities for growth, learning, and career development

  • Collaboration in a diverse team of experts across disciplines and cultures

  • The chance to contribute to European and international innovation projects

Let’s Shape the Future Together

Are you excited to apply AI in healthcare and contribute to solutions that matter?

We would love to hear from you.
