Job description

EnergyVille is a collaboration between the Belgian research partners KU Leuven, VITO, imec and UHasselt in the fields of sustainable energy and intelligent energy systems. Within the Energyville’s software implementation team we are looking or a Software engineer/data analysist with main focus on District Energy Modelling.

The District Energy Modelling team at VITO/EnergyVille develops models, algorithms, and software for planning, monitoring, and controlling energy consumption and production at the building and neighbourhood level. The team also maintains, utilizes, and further improves our in-house developed state-of-the-art district energy, building and system models. These models are developed in Python across different applied research projects. The models are used internally and in assignments for external clients.

Your responsibilities

  • You will be part of the multi-disciplinary EnergyVille Implementation Team, to co-develop the models with the domain experts, bring the models to a high TRL level and valorise them in projects and services.

  • Together with a team of domain experts, software architects and developers, you are responsible for the further development, management, defining architecture and design and quality of the modelling software and define software test specifications and procedures.

  • On the other hand, you must be capable of taking decisions and execute task in an independent manner as well.

  • Also, client deployment of the algorithms and software (API based) on both on-premises as Cloud environments is part of your responsibilities.

  • Clients of the models are typically energy consultants, energy service providers, banks, energy suppliers, contractors/installation technicians.

  • Coordinate the extension of the in-house developed models and keep an overview of development priorities.

  • Advice on the software and data analysis aspects in proposals for new projects or customer implementations.

  • You coach your research colleagues in software tasks and techniques related to the district energy, building and system model development.

  • You align SW development and deployment principles with other colleagues from the EnergyVille Implementation Team.

Job requirements

  • You hold a master’s degree in computer science or data science, engineering, applied mathematics, or a relevant similar education in combination with 5+ years relevant experience in professional software development and a minimum of 2 years in software architecture.

  • You have proven experience in using data analysis and modelling techniques.

  • You are familiar with best practices in data management (e.g., in terms of governance, security, integrity), data architecture design and development.

  • You are proficient in Python programming language and use principles from object-oriented programming.

  • You have knowledge of cloud solutions and certificates (preferable Microsoft Azure), Docker and orchestration platforms, relational databases (SQL, PostgreSQL, ESQL), and database management.

  • You are proficient with team-based software development processes (e.g., agile/scrum) and version control/testing/deployment tools (e.g., Git, JIRA, CI/CD).

  • You have experience with, or are eager to develop expertise in, building and area dynamics related to energy.

  • You have experience in managing software projects, preferably in a research environment.

  • You feel confident and well-prepared to take the lead in discussions with energy researchers, data scientists, and the IT application development team.

  • Experience with Software architecture definition and implementation is a strong asset.
