The Specialized Organic and Inorganic Analysis Laboratory (GOAL) at VITO is at the forefront of analytical innovation, with a growing focus on micro- and nanoplastics characterization. To achieve these ambitious goals, we leverage a multidisciplinary approach encompassing analytical chemistry, instrumental analysis, and nanometrology. GOAL’s advanced infrastructure supports a broad array of complementary techniques, including:
Specialized instruments: Pyr-GC-MS, DART-MS, LC-MS, S(T)EM, AFM, µRaman, FTIR, µXRF, and particle-free test chambers.
Nanomaterial detection platforms: NTA, DLS, zeta potential, UV-Vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, (single-particle) ICP-MS, size exclusion chromatography, and field flow fractionation coupled with light scattering (MALS/DLS), UV/fluorescence detectors, and ICP-MS.
Sample preparation tools: Microwave digestion, ultrasonication, and more.
We invite a highly motivated junior researcher to join us for a 2-year position dedicated to advancing analytical methods for analysis of low µm range microplastics, nanoplastics, and leachable compounds from plastics.
Responsibilities
Develop new analytical methodologies for microplastics and nanoplastics analysis.
Innovate fast-screening methods for detecting leachable plastic micropollutants.
Contribute to method development for analyzing plastic leachates.
Write reports for related Horizon Europe projects, prepare scientific articles, and present findings at group meetings and conferences.
Maintain laboratory equipment and ensure complete documentation of research results.
A PhD in Analytical Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Nanometrology, or a related field.
Proven experience in developing analytical techniques for microplastics and nanoparticles, such as Pyr-GC-MS.
Excellent academic writing, organizational, and time management skills.
Proficiency in English, both written and spoken.
A collaborative mindset with strong interpersonal skills, capable of setting priorities and managing multiple objectives within a team environment.
You will work in a cutting-edge laboratory with access to state-of-the-art analytical instruments and multidisciplinary expertise. Your contributions will shape the future of microplastics and nanoplastics research, addressing critical environmental challenges and advancing analytical science.
