R&D Engineer Atmosphere

Job description

As a researcher you will contribute to Flemish, European and international air quality policy:

  • You develop and configure models that simulate and predict the emissions and dispersion of pollutants in the atmosphere. The focus of these models is at the urban scale and are used to support the environmental policy of Flemish and foreign governments, city administrations, urban planners and industries.
  • You contribute to scientific software development, data processing and data visualization.
  • You are involved in the integration of new data science techniques such as machine learning and data assimiliation methodologies in the modelling toolbox.
  • You are responsible for the analysis of the model results and reporting to the customer or end user.
  • Within projects you always work together with fellow researchers and IT professionals, you report on the results and you publish in scientific journals.

Job requirements

  • You hold a master degree in exact or applied sciences or engineering. An additional qualification in atmospheric chemistry is a plus.
  • You have experience in urban air quality modelling, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and/or data science techniques.
  • You are good at manipulating large data sets and you have a good knowledge of Python or a similar programming language.
  • You have experience with the visualisation of spatial data. Experience with GIS software is a plus.
  • You are accurate, you work in a structured way and you strive to deliver quality. You can document your work and report the results directly to customers.
  • You are customer-oriented and work solution-oriented.
  • You are fluent in English, fluent in Dutch is a plus.

The other days you can work from home, Mol or from a VITO satellite office (Antwerp-Berchem, Genk, Ghent, Ostend) depending on the needs of the activity.
