The MESCH team at VITO develops industrially viable membrane processes to intensify chemical processes in industry.
In a new research initiative, we are investigating membrane technology for the safe and efficient neutralization of toxic and hazardous chemicals. By integrating conversion, neutralization and separation steps, we aim to maximize reaction efficiency, minimize equipment footprint through continuous processing, and ensure environmentally compliant effluent discharge through downstream processing.
Our approach helps civil authorities and first responders reduce the risks associated with incident response through the development and demonstration of a membrane-based continuous reaction–separation process.
To strengthen our team of approximately 20 researchers and technicians, we are looking for a new colleague to help carry out projects on the neutralization of toxic and hazardous chemicals.
We are offering a laboratory technician position on a two-year contract, potentially extendable to three years.
· Together with our team of experts, you will support the execution and follow-up of dedicated projects integrating toxic chemical neutralization with a membrane separation step.
· Based on initial work plans, you will plan, carry out, supervise and coordinate conversion and separation tests. This includes designing and conducting experiments, analyzing test results and reporting your findings.
· You will record parameter settings and summarize test results.
· Drawing on your technical expertise, you will develop proposals to continuously improve test setups and testing infrastructure. You will make mechanical modifications to filtration loops to meet the requirements of each test setup.
· You will apply both your chemical and technical expertise in all your tasks.
· Your day-to-day work will take place in the laboratory.
· After an initial training period, your motivation, background knowledge and insight will enable you to carry out assignments independently and reproducibly.
· You will ensure compliance with environmental, safety and quality requirements.
· You hold at least a bachelor’s degree, with a background in chemistry or process technology.
· You have a proven track record of applying knowledge of continuous reaction design, membrane filtration and product characterization.
· Ideally, you have practical knowledge of membrane separation processes for liquid streams.
· You are enthusiastic about experimental laboratory work, data processing and reporting.
· You work well as part of a team.
· You are flexible, work well under pressure and approach your work carefully and systematically.
· You excel at working accurately and reproducibly and at documenting your activities and results.
· You enjoy working in a laboratory environment, take a hands-on approach and have a strong focus on troubleshooting.
· You have a strong interest in collaborating with partners in industry, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), research institutes and universities.
· You have a good command of written and spoken English.
· You are a national of an EU or NATO country.
