The function of Data Architect at VITO offers you various challenges that call for creative solutions in the design and implementation of a federated data infrastructure for storage, access and reuse of a wide range of data sources. With your long-term vision, you support EU-wide stakeholders in assessing the impact of chemicals on human health by proposing a data platform architecture to improve accessibility, interoperability and integration of data across these databases and repositories, in line with the FAIR data principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable).

In essence, you play a key role in PARC, a new European partnership with strong ambitions to better manage and share chemical risk assessment data, exposure data and health data. Some of your daily activities:

  • You define technical requirements and translate them into an overall architecture and implementation plan.
  • You investigate existing technologies and solutions, compare them to the needs and requirements of the data users and supervise adaptation and implementation of these solutions.
  • You work closely together with our European partners, with other data experts within VITO and with domain experts on Environment & Health.
  • You integrate practical solutions to make data more FAIR.

Job requirements

  • You hold a Master’s degree (or PhD) in a relevant field (Informatics, Computer Sciences, Sciences, Mathematics, …) or equivalent through experience in a complex IT environment.
  • You have thorough experience with of
    • the development and implementation of federated data infrastructures,
    • the integration of data from distributed databases and repositories,
    • and the development of web services in this context.
  • You are familiar with the concept of linked data and linked data technologies, like RDF, OWL and SPARQL.
  • You speak and write English at full professional level.

In addition, you organize your work independently and help move things forward. Are you flexible, agile and eager to interact and collaborate with data-technical experts and stakeholders in different research domains (environment, health, toxicology, modelling, …)? You preferably have experience with the (re)use of personal, sensitive data.

Our head office is in Mol, here we meet at least once a week. Part-time work from home or working from a satellite office in Antwerp-Berchem, Genk, Ghent or Ostend is possible.
